The potential effluents from pulp and paper mills are classified into following three main categories based on their generation phase/state, that is, solid waste, wastewater, gaseous waste.

• The solid waste mainly contains sludges from primary and secondary treatment and causticizing in kraft mill recovery section, solids such as grit bark and other mill wastes and ash from coal fired boilers.
• The wastewater mainly contains suspended solids (bark particles, dirt, pigments, and fibers), dissolved inorganic substances (such as sodium hydrogen and sodium silicate), dissolved colloidal organics, bleached agents, dyes, toxic chemicals and metals. Along with them, other pollutants discharged from the pulp and paper industry include sizing agents, alcohols, thermal loads, turpentine, and microbial biomass such as coliform groups.
• The gaseous waste is mainly various volatile sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and particulates of sulfur and nitrogen oxides.
