Description | Acenaphthene appears as white needles. Melting point 93.6°C. Soluble in hot alcohol. Denser than water and insoluble in water. Hence sinks in water. May irritate skin and mucous membranes. Emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes when heated to decomposition. Derived from coal tar and used to make dyes, pharmaceuticals, insecticides, fungicides, and plastics.;WHITE-TO-BEIGE CRYSTALS. |

Application | Acenaphthene, a colorless or pale yellow crystalline powder, serves multiple purposes, primarily as an intermediate in the production of dyes. This tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is also utilized in the manufacturing of certain plastics, as well as in insecticides and fungicides. Although acenaphthene is a solid that does not dissolve in water, it is soluble in a variety of organic solvents. It is naturally found in crude oil and is produced during coal carbonization processes, such as coke production. Emissions from petroleum refining and combustion processes contribute to its presence in the environment, where it is considered a notable pollutant. Acenaphthene, identified as a Priority Pollutant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is detected in various emissions including those from cigarette smoke, vehicle exhaust, and industrial waste, highlighting its significance from an environmental and industrial perspective. |
