Catalyst Substrate

Catalyst substrate is one of the important factors affecting catalyst efficiency. The substrate not only plays a supporting role in the catalyst, but also provides a flow channel for the reaction and product. So, it is very important to select the appropriate catalyst substrate material. According to the structure, catalyst substrates are divided into granular substrates, honeycomb substrates and SiC foam substrates. According to the raw materials, catalyst substrates mainly include ceramic substrates and metal substrates, among which ceramic substrates are the mainstream.

The Role of Catalyst Substrate

There are several functions of catalyst substrate in the catalytic process, including:

  • Increase the effective surface area and provide suitable pore structure
  • Improve the mechanical strength of catalyst, including wear resistance, hardness, compressive strength and impact resistance, etc.
  • Improve the thermal stability of catalyst
  • Provide the active center of catalytic reaction
  • React with active ingredients to form new compounds
  • Increase the anti-toxicity of catalyst and reduce the sensitivity to poison
  • Save the amount of active ingredients and reduce the cost

Types of Catalyst Substrate

At present, catalyst substrates mainly include ceramic substrates, metal substrates and glass fiber substrates according to the material composition. Among them, ceramic substrates have become the preferred substrate material due to the abundant source of raw materials, cheap price, excellent performance and many other advantages. It is worth mentioning that ceramic substrates have been used to purify automobile exhaust in 1971. In addition, according to their structure, catalyst substrates can be divided into the granular substrate, honeycomb substrate and foam substrate. And honeycomb substrates are the popular one at present. Therefore, honeycomb ceramic substrates are the currently mainstream catalyst substrate, and will continue to be the mainstream in the long term. The main raw material of honeycomb ceramic substrates is cordierite (2MgO·2Al2O3·5SiO2). Cordierite not only has low expansion coefficient, good chemical corrosion resistance and good heat resistance, but also has high porosity. So, it is often used in gas purification converters.
