Introduction

The catalyst coating is compound powder material composed of one or more metal oxides. Catalyst coating has several main functions: (1) Improve the mechanical strength and specific surface area of catalyst to meet the requirements of the catalytic requirements; (2) Dilute, support and disperse catalyst active ingredients and small amounts of auxiliaries, so as to improve the efficiency of catalyst; (3) Improve the activity, stability and toxicity resistance of the catalyst through the synergistic effect with precious metal active ingredients. Therefore, the catalyst performance is affected by the quality of the coating. With the rapid development of catalysts and the continuous improvement of standards of automobile exhaust and harmful gas emission, catalyst coating materials are constantly updated and reformed. At present, the most frequently catalyst coatings are alumina and zeolite.

Preparation Methods

The main methods of preparing catalyst coating on catalyst include impregnation method, slurry coating method and sol-gel method.

  • Impregnation method: First, a certain viscosity, surface tension and fluidity of slurry is prepared by the suspension agent, dispersant and additives, and then the catalyst substrate is impregnated in the slurry. The slurry liquid is sucked into the porous structure of the substrate because of the capillary effect. Finally, after drying and roasting, the coating slurry will attach to the catalyst substrate.
  • Slurry coating method: The method is to use wet ball milling method to grind the coating material into 5 μm size particles, and then coated coating slurry on the catalyst substrate, evenly.
  • Sol-gel method: The method relies on the accumulation of coating colloidal particles in the catalyst substrate during the gelation process, so as to form a coating on the catalyst substrate.

In fact, after the catalyst coating prepared by the above methods, drying and roasting processes are needed for several times to reach a certain load.
